Galbraith LLP is one of Scotland’s leading independent property consultancies, with expertise across a broad spectrum of property related services. With a team of over 225 employees in offices across Scotland (including Edinburgh, Stirling, Perth, Cupar, Inverness, Castle Douglas, Ayr, Elgin, Galashiels, Kelso and Aberdeen) they offer an unparalleled breadth of skills across all property sectors.
Every year Galbraith has graduates who undertake the APC. The APC or assessment of professional competence is the training scheme that graduates need to complete on the job to qualify as a chartered surveyor. Becoming chartered with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is a key milestone in a surveyor’s professional development.
The APC final assessment is made up of a written submission and a 1 hour interview. The interview consists of a 10 minute presentation to a panel followed by 45 minutes of questions covering the presentation as well as other core competencies. The exam is extremely stressful for candidates being the culmination of 2 years hard work and the next step on their career ladder.
Since 2007 I have run APC Presentation Skills courses for Galbraith to prepare the candidates for the exam.
The course is over 1 day with up to 5 candidates and we work on how to deliver the 10 minute presentation as well as how to handle the interview questions. They practise, I film them, give feedback and they see the results which means they head to the exam 6 weeks later feeling confident and fully prepared for it. The skills they learn during the day will also benefit them long term in their day to day client work.
Since 2007 Galbraith have achieved a 94% pass rate.
‘I found Maryanne’s APC prep day to be extremely useful and targeted key areas I needed to focus on. It has been an excellent confidence booster for my final exam preparation.’
